Paysen’s winning run propels Kentucky past Tennessee

LaRue County High School 2008 graduate Tesha Paysen scored what turned out to be the winning run as the Kentucky softball All-Stars edged Tennessee’s best 3-2 in the final game of a three-game series at Western Kentucky University’s
Softball Complex in Bowling Green Thursday.

Tennessee, which had won the third annual series the previous two years, captured the first game 1-0. Kentucky rallied for a 10-4 victory in the second contest.

In the deciding encounter with Tennessee ahead 2-0, Russell’s Samantha Sparks, later named Kentucky’s MVP, swatted a single with runners at first and second base.

Her hit sent Jessica Williams of Shelby County across the plate. On the same play, an outfielder’s error allowed Paysen, who was running for Greenwood’s Lindsey Green who had walked, and Sparks to score.

“Samantha hit the ball to the centerfielder who dropped her glove too early, and the ball rolled straight between her legs to the fence,” said Paysen. “I was headed to third as soon as she hit the ball.”

Paysen started at left field in the first game and switched to right field for the final game. By regulation, those who started the first game had to sit out the second to allow teammates playing time.

She thought her Kentucky teammates gelled quickly as they were together as a team for only about 36 hours.

“I think we all played together real good as a team; we all pulled it through,” she said.

For the victory, the Kentucky squad had their names engraved on the half-blue, half-orange traveling trophy.

“We were all really excited to claim that first series win over Tennessee,” Paysen said.

Teens represent county at 4-H conference

LaRue County was represented at the State 4-H Teen Conference in June with five delegates attending. Rachel Humphries and Tara Warren were on the Spotlight group that helped to capture the event by taking photos and writing news articles. They helped produce a newsletter which was given out to delegates on the last day and a slideshow which was shown at the last session.

Over the past year, Jessica Wells has served on the State 4-H Teen Council which helps plan the Teen Conference. At the closing dance, she was introduced and recognized for her efforts throughout the year. State Teen Council delegates hold weekend meetings four times throughout the year.

Delegates are elected to the State Teen Council to represent their District.

Elections will take place later this summer for new State Teen Council Delegates.

During the Awards Assembly held at the State 4-H Teen Conference, two LaRue County 4-H members were recognized for their accomplishments in the the 4-H Honors Awards Program. Megan Mier was recognized for earning the Silver Award. Weston Heath, also from LaRue County, earned the Bronze Award. Congratulations to Megan and Weston for their hard work and great accomplishments in 4-H.
